San José de Chiquitos, the historic capital of the Santa Cruz department, seen as the "cradle of Cruceño heritage", surprises travelers with its magnificent Missionary Ensemble, its living culture, the hospitality of its people, and its unique natural environment.

It's an ideal destination to explore Chiquitania and its Jesuit missions. It is located in the Chiquitos province in the Santa Cruz Department, to the west of Bolivia.

San José de Chiquitos was the third town founded in the missionary territory of Chiquitos by the Jesuit Company on March 19, 1697.

The name "Chiquitos" originated from the early conquerors who referred to the inhabitants of the area this way due to their shorter stature.

It is located 277 km from the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
